Niners Thought Jimmy Garoppolo Would Be Traded To Commanders

Sep 22, 2022 8:43 AM

The San Francisco 49ers believed they had a trade in place to send Jimmy Garoppolo to the Washington Commanders before the quarterback's offseason shoulder surgery, according to a report.

When Garoppolo decided to have surgery, Washington moved on and made the trade for Carson Wentz.

With Trey Lance suffering a season-ending injury in Week 2, the 49ers will turn back to Garoppolo for the foreseeable future.

Russell Wilson Confirms Seahawks Tried To Trade Him In Past

Sep 9, 2022 8:26 AM

Russell Wilson has confirmed that the Seattle Seahawks actually tried to trade him before they dealt him to the Denver Broncos this offseason.

An ESPN story published this week stated that the Seahawks attempted to trade Wilson before the 2018 NFL draft.

"Definitely they tried to, a couple of times, tried to see what was out there," Wilson said. "It's part of the business, being a professional and everything else ... I believe in my talents, of who I am, I feel I'm one of the best in the world."

According to a source, Wilson heard while attending Super Bowl LV in February of 2021 that Seattle previously had other conversations about trading him in addition to their 2018 call to the Cleveland Browns.

A Seahawks source has said that the 2018 call to the Browns was the only time they actively tried to trade Wilson other than when they did so to Denver in March.

Seahawks Were Interested In Patrick Mahomes in 17, Josh Allen In 18

Sep 7, 2022 2:21 PM

Despite the presence of Russell Wilson on their roster, John Schneider and the Seattle Seahawks had interest in 2017 in Patrick Mahomes and in Josh Allen in 2018.

Sources say Schneider was so enamored by Mahomes that the Seahawks would have selected him had he fallen to them late in the first round.

Schneider was working for the Green Bay Packers in 2005 when Aaron Rodgers fell to them.

"They were f---ing pissed," a Seahawks' front-office source said of Wilson's camp.

The Seahawks also flirted with moving up to No. 1 in the 2018 draft while offering Wilson. Wilson ended up getting a no-trade clause out of the deal.

Russell Wilson's MVP Chase Initiated Issues With Seahawks

Sep 7, 2022 2:17 PM

Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks had great success early in their tenure together, but the last few seasons were marred by dysfunction. Wilson wanted out with the belief he was held back by Pete Carroll and the organization, while the Seahawks lost faith in him and had reservations about how his game would age.

Wilson was an MVP candidate in 2019, but was livid with how Carroll took his foot off the gas during a blowout win in October against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Seahawks went into the 2020 campaign with the plan to lean more on Wilson's arm, much to the delight of the quarterback and fans who had backed "Let Russ Cook," a social media movement and catchphrase that Wilson would later trademark for charitable purposes.

Wilson and the Seahawks started the season 5-0 with him as an early MVP frontrunner. Wilson struggled down the stretch as his MVP hopes faded.

"What are we doing here?" one source in the Seahawks' front office remembers thinking at the time. "Are we trying to win games or are we trying to win MVP?"

Carroll fired Schottenheimer after the season, citing philosophical differences.

Jimmy Garoppolo: Didn't Expect To Be Staying With Niners

Sep 2, 2022 10:13 AM

Jimmy Garoppolo spoke to the San Francisco media on Thursday for the first time since Feb. 1 and since he signed a revised one-year contract to stay with the Niners.

"[Returning] really wasn't on my mind to be completely honest," Garoppolo said. "I was training out here. I had to be here, so I was here for that reason. I was just trying to get my body right. ... I felt very confident out there and I knew that I was ready to roll. I just need to figure out where it was. And things kind of fell into place these last couple days."

For most of the offseason, a divorce between Garoppolo and the Niners seemed imminent with Trey Lance set to take over at quarterback.

Roquan Smith Says He's All-In On Bears' Season

Sep 1, 2022 8:58 AM

Roquan Smith sat out practices and requested a trade from the Chicago Bears during training camp, but the linebacker now says he's all-in on the season.

Smith is heading into the final year of his rookie contract.

Asked if there’s any chance he and Ryan Poles might get together and talk about a contract extension, Smith answered, "No. No. I'm not focused on that right now. It's already in the back of my mind. It just came to the front when you mentioned it."

Smith said that while he wanted a new contract or a trade during the offseason, that's all in the past.

"I"m not focused on that, if I'm being completely honest," Smith said. "My focus is on making this year the best year I can and then go from there. I don’t want to look forward too much to the future or anything like that. I’m just focused on now, having the best year I can with my teammates and playing the game I love. That’s what means the most to me."
